MS Project Calculation Option and ERROR

Microsoft Project Calculation Option and ERROR on few fields

V: 1.0, Updated: 03/29/2016

Microsoft Project as a scheduling application, runs different formulas behind the scene.  You may run into the following scenarios:

  1. Some of the columns (fields) in Microsoft Project will not show the updated data
  2. Some of the fields will show #ERROR instead of the data

Microsoft Project has a calculation option that is set to On. Go to File > Options > Schedule > Scroll down to Calculation section on right. You will find On and Off options there. It defaults to On. You can hit Ctrl F9 to turn on or Off the calculation setting in Microsoft Project. Notice the bottom left of status bar and you will see the calculation change messages.

The setting says ‘Calculate project after each edit‘. In case no edits are made, the project will not calculate data! In situations, you will see #ERROR message in cells for few fields. For example create a Date field and use formula Now() to populate current date in that field.

Even with Calculation option set On, if you see the #ERROR or don’t see the correct data, hit the F9 key. It will force the calculation and will update the data in Microsoft Project.

There are four ways to let Microsoft Project perform the calculations. We discussed few options above. Below are four calculation options in Microsoft Project and one of which can be used:

  1. File > Options > Schedule > Calculation and set to On
  2. Hit Ctrl F9 to turn on / Off calculation option
  3. Right click on the top left cell in the view and choose Calculate Project from the menu MSP2013_Calculations_04
  4. Add Calculate Now or Calculate Project commands to the Quick Access Toolbar

Add Commands to the Quick Access Toolbar

  1. To add commands to the Quick Access Toolbar, right click on it on top right  and choose ‘Customize Quick Access Toolbar‘ (of go to File > Options > Quick Access ToolbarMSP2013_Calculations_05_CustomizeRibbon
  2. Choose ‘All commands‘ under ‘Choose commands from’ drop down. From the list of commands, select Calculate Now and click Add button in the middle to add it to the right side. [You can add Calculate Project command as alternate] MSP2013_Calculations_06_CustomizeRibbon
  3. You will see the commands icon in Quick Access Toolbar MSP2013_Calculations_07_CustomizeRibbon

  • #ERROR in Microsoft Project
  • #ERROR in Project Calculation
  • Manually recalculate project data
  • Auto recalculate project data
  • Tasks not Scheduled as expected

SharePoint Server 2016 Announcement and My Wish List

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2015

Version: 1.1,

Updated: 2/3/2015

Microsoft has been pushing for Office 365 and SharePoint Online for last few recent years. They recently announced that next version of SharePoint Server will be released in 2016.

SharePoint Server 2016 will offer customers enhanced, flexible deployment options, improved reliability and new IT agility, enabled for massive scale. SharePoint Server 2016 is expected to provide rich hybrid capabilities with Office 365 version.

SharePoint Server 2016 – My Wish List of Feature

I wish for many new and improved features in next version of SharePoint Server in 2016. Following are some of the top wishes based on my experience with customers.

  1. More enriched workflows
  2. Document Scanning Feature
  3. Making Project Server as completely independent application that can be used without the need of full SharePoint Enterprise. (in recent years we have seen Office Web Apps as an application that requires separate server for deployment now)
  4. Making better across the farm security reporting (without the need to 3rd party tools)
  5. Better Forms solution that has better cross platforms compatibility (InfoPath replacement)
  6. Making an On-Prem version of Yammer as a service application or separate app that can be tightly integrated with SharePoint
  7. Making Video Encoding features available for more enriched video publishing within on-prem
  8. Making Delve available in On-Prem as well

I’ll be adding more items later. Read the following Office blog post with recent announcement details.

Query to List PWA Groups with Resources

Query to List PWA Groups with Resources

Version 4.1, Modified: 09/03/2018

Applies To: Project Server 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016

The following query gives you list of groups with users, their NT accounts, email address & some other details in Project Web App. I’ve used the query to get list of all users that have Project Manager / Resource Manager access or part of similar custom groups. These can be often helpful in getting the list of users that might have MS Project Professional installed on their desktops for licensing counts.
